Pilgrimage in Nevers: in the footsteps of Saint Bernadette Soubirous

While Lourdes is associated with the Marian apparitions of 1858, it was in Nevers that Saint Bernadette Soubirous spent the last years of her life and where she rests today. Each year, around 200,000 pilgrims and visitors, including nearly 100,000 from abroad, come to the Espace Bernadette Soubirous Nevers. The ducal city has thus become one of the great places of spiritual tourism in France, a natural complement to a pilgrimage to Lourdes. Here is how to plan a visit or a group stay around this religious heritage.

Bernadette Soubirous, thirteen years in Nevers

Bernadette Soubirous arrived at the Saint-Gildard convent in Nevers on 7 July 1866, to join the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of Nevers. She lived there for thirteen years, until her death on 16 April 1879, at the age of thirty-five. During the exhumations carried out as part of the beatification process, her body was found intact, which is why it is often described as incorruptible. Since 3 August 1925, it has rested in a glass and bronze shrine, in the convent chapel, where visitors can see it. Beatified on 14 June 1925 and then canonised on 8 December 1933 by Pope Pius XI, Bernadette is now celebrated on 16 April.

Visiting the Espace Bernadette Soubirous

The sanctuary is located at 34 rue Saint-Gildard, 58000 Nevers, in the former mother house of the Sisters of Charity. The visit is organised around the shrine, displayed in the chapel, but also the Saint-Joseph chapel, a reproduction of the Massabielle grotto built in 1884, and the oratory of the Holy Cross, the place where Bernadette passed away. A museum retraces her daily life in Nevers through personal belongings. The site is surrounded by about four hectares of gardens conducive to quiet reflection. Remember to check the opening hours with the sanctuary before your visit, as they vary depending on the season.

A major place of welcome for groups

The Espace Bernadette has facilities to welcome pilgrims and groups, with accommodation, catering and meeting rooms on site. Many parishes, fraternities and school groups organise stays of several days here, combining times of prayer, visits and discovery of the town. For families or groups who want more independence and space, staying in town remains a flexible alternative, just a few minutes from the sanctuary.

A living sanctuary in the heart of the town

With nearly 200,000 pilgrims and visitors each year, including around 100,000 from abroad, the Espace Bernadette is one of the most visited sanctuaries in the region. The visit is not limited to the shrine: the reproduction of the Massabielle grotto, built in 1884, extends the link with Lourdes, while the museum displays objects from Bernadette’s daily life and retraces her journey, from Lourdes to Nevers. The oratory of the Holy Cross, where she passed away, and the extensive gardens invite quiet reflection. Many visitors take a full day, combining times of prayer, a visit to the museum and a walk in the grounds.

Cathedral, Saint-Étienne, Sainte-Marie chapel

A pilgrimage to Nevers extends into a genuine religious circuit. The Saint-Cyr-et-Sainte-Julitte cathedral presents its two opposing choirs, one Romanesque and one Gothic. Its stained glass, destroyed in the bombing of 1944, was replaced between 1977 and 2009 by one of the largest sets of contemporary stained glass, across more than a hundred bays, the work of several renowned artists. The church of Saint-Étienne is among the best-preserved Romanesque buildings in France: a former Cluniac priory, it was consecrated in 1097. Finally, the Sainte-Marie chapel, the former chapel of the Visitation convent and a listed historic monument since 1862, surprises visitors with its rare Baroque façade. Three stops that perfectly round off a visit to the sanctuary.

Coming to Nevers on pilgrimage

Nevers is easy to reach. By train, the direct line from Paris-Bercy connects the town in about two hours. By car, the A77 motorway leads from the Paris region to Nevers, around 240 kilometres. The town therefore lends itself well to a spiritual stopover, whether you come for the day, for a weekend or to extend a great Marian pilgrimage towards Lourdes.

2025, a jubilee year for the centenary

The year 2025 was a major milestone for the sanctuary. Bernadette Soubirous was beatified on 14 June 1925, the same year her body was transferred into the shrine, on 3 August 1925. To mark this centenary, a jubilee year was opened at the Espace Bernadette Soubirous Nevers, with solemn Masses, times of prayer, processions and cultural events throughout the season. These gatherings draw large crowds and confirm Nevers among the leading destinations for spiritual tourism in France.

To make the most of a visit, the sanctuary publishes its own calendar of celebrations and Mass times. As dates and access conditions change with the liturgical seasons, it is wise to check the official programme before booking a stay, especially for a group or a parish wishing to time their visit with a particular event.

Extending your visit in the ducal city

A pilgrimage to Nevers is well worth extending with a tour of the town. A few minutes’ walk from the sanctuary, the historic centre brings together the Ducal Palace, former residence of the counts and dukes of Nevers, the ramparts and the riverside walk along the Loire. Visitors with a sweet tooth often take home a few Négus, the chocolate-coated caramels created in Nevers in 1902, or a box of Nougatine, another local speciality born in the 19th century. A fine way to combine reflection, heritage and simple pleasures in a single stay.
